Topic: Past, Present and Future of Neurofunctional Physiotherapy

– Prof. Dr. Carolee Winstein, University of Southern Carolina

This course will be permeated by the personal experience of someone who began his clinical career in 1973 and his research in 1987. Profa Carolee will use her experience with the Special Therapeutic Exercise Project (STEP) to describe the past and present of Neurofunctional Physiotherapy and Neurorehabilitation, which have been organized around four P: Prevention, Prediction, Plasticity and Participation. Based on recent basic and clinical research, it will identify current trends in the practice of neuro-rehabilitation and will include its reflections on the negative results of several recent clinical studies in Neurofunctional Physiotherapy. Finally, she intends to share with us her perspective on the future of neuro-rehabilitation for children and adults with movement disorders.

    The objective of this workshop is to gather two clinical cases of patients with cerebral vascular accident and Parkinson’s disease, with the respective descriptions and illustrations of their clinical pictures, through videos, in order to broaden the discussion of possible interventions and clinical decision making among diverse professionals, whose formation distinguishes between a recognized professional clinical practice and renowned academic-scientific formation. Thus, this forum intends to integrate professionals with different experiences in the area of ​​neurofunctional physiotherapy and to promote open dialogue and the approximation between science and clinical practice.
